Spring has arrived but it still looks drab

Spring is finally upon us but it is still in the transition stage. The snow is melting, the ground is still half frozen and there is no new green in sight. Since I needed to choose the next header for our web site, I thought it should be something neutral to the changing of the seasons. Earlier in March I was on Vancouver Island and visited one of the coastal parks where you can walk along the beach on the polished pebbles and rest a while on the logs that are washed up on the shore. – Leslie

And the leaves fell

About 10 days ago we had a snowstorm come through and the snow stuck around for several days. A couple of days later it was followed by strong winds that sent a deluge of leaves onto the ground, all over the snow. Here are a few shots of those leaves. – Leslie

Rowboats at the Dock

Thought it was time I got in tune with the season and get the header changed. This image was taken last year as I sat on a bench beside Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park, enjoying my morning coffee. Enjoy your day! – Leslie

Maple leaves lie scattered on the ground

A few years ago while out at Nanaimo, B.C. in mid November I went for a walk along the downtown waterfront. Many leaves were on the ground but some were still on the trees, something not usually seen in the rest of our country by that late in the year. What I particularly noticed were the small red Maple trees in the park, I hadn’t realized how many reds could be found in that region of Canada. When I think of reds I tend to think of central Canada. In Alberta most of the leaves change to brilliant yellows and are on the ground by early October. I also decided it was time the header changed. – Leslie

Canada Day 2015 – 148 years old

As we go into Canada Day, we thought about what symbolizes Canada and for us the Common Loon is a top contender as it appears on our dollar coin (the Loonie) and it is found throughout most of Canada. Why not post an image or two, or maybe three, of such a grand bird that we recently took in Jasper National Park. (We’re changing the header at the same time)

Although many Canadians assume that the Common Loon is Canada’s National Bird, but surprisingly Canada doesn’t have an official bird. Hopefully by the time Canada turns 150 years old in 2017 we will finally have a national bird. If you want to weigh in on what bird you think symbolizes Canada the best, you can place your vote for Canada’s national bird on the Canadian Geographic website (http://www.canadiangeographic.ca/nationalbird/).

This is our salute to Canada Day, may it remain wild and free. Happy Canada Day everyone! – Leslie and Mark

Spring arrives in the garden

Our garden is a little wild in places, as we have encouraged wildflower species to grow whenever possible. One species that we encouraged is Goat’s-beard, also known as Yellow Salsify (Tragopogon dubius). Today I noticed that it is one of the first plants showing itself in our garden this year. A few years back Mark went out and took a few shots of the Goat’s-beard seed heads, this is one of the results of his morning in our garden. – Leslie

The snow has arrived!

With most of Alberta now having fresh snow on the ground, I thought it was time for the header to reflect a more seasonal look. The image that I chose had been taken in the month of August a few years ago, high in the Tonquin Valley of Jasper National Park, Alberta. High up in the alpine you can get a taste of winter any time of the year. Get out and enjoy the winter season and hope for an early spring. – Leslie

Header Image changes again

The new header image is of Abraham Lake and the Front Ranges of the Canadian Rocky Mountain, it was taken at Windy Point on one of the few days that I have ever seen the lake so placid; there was hardly a ripple.  The final image was created by stitching 6 images together and shot on Fujichrome Velvia film.  Abraham Lake is located west of Nordegg, Alberta in an area known as David Thompson Country.  Abraham Lake is named after Stoney Indian – Silas Abraham and his family. – Leslie

Header change and a Short bit – Longing for the change to come

It’s snowing outside and I think it is time for a bit of spring, even if it doesn’t look this way yet.  So here are a few images to put a bit of cheer on the screen along with changing our websites header, looking forward to seeing some greenery soon! – Leslie

Header change and Short Bits – Lilies in the light

During my recent visit with my Dad there were some lilies dropped off for Dad and I to enjoy, here are a couple of images I took of them. Also being the first day of winter we felt it was time for a header change. Leslie
