Capture the magic of the mountains in winter when the snow is fresh and the ice on Abraham Lake is usually at it’s best.

This tour is based out of the eco-award winning Aurum Lodge in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains in the Province of Alberta. The Lodge overlooks Abraham Lake in David Thompson Country and is approximately 35 minutes from the Banff Jasper Icefields Parkway (Hwy. 93). Aurum Lodge is the only accommodations open in winter in the immediate area of the lake. Many photographers flock to photograph the famous methane bubbles and cracks in the ice of Abraham Lake. Staying right by the lake means that we don’t have a long drive and the lake is just steps away from the lodge.
Join Leslie and/or Mark Degner and Alan Ernst (from Aurum Lodge) on this tour that explores “Winter Mountain Magic” in the company of like-minded photographers. As this is a photography tour we have no planned classroom instruction as would be expected in a workshop, but Leslie and Alan will be on hand to help you with your photography questions.

As the temperature drops and it begins to freeze, ice forms over the lakes and along the edges of rivers, while snow blankets the mountains, winter arrives in the Rocky Mountains. No matter what the weather gives us there are always little jewels to be found if you just take the moments to open your eyes and look around. It can challenge you to look beyond the starkness of winter to see the subtle beauty of the Rocky Mountains dressed in white.
Sunrise and sunsets are at reasonable times of the day. Keep in mind that this time of year can bring significant snow, wind and very cold temperatures. But we will hope for great conditions and make the best of it.
Evenings may find us reviewing, editing or critiquing our images from the days shoot, or possibly discussing various aspects of photography.
It is recommended that participants have a basic understanding of photography and are reasonably familiar with the gear they have and basic camera functions.
Participants should be in reasonable shape and have the ability to hike short distances over rough terrain up to a couple of kilometers with their camera gear.
